Lamp Shade Sources

Whether you make your own lamp, restore an old one or have just had a lamp for a long time, at some point you may need a new lamp shade. The following are some great sources for shades, in a range of price points listed from high to low:

Gracious Home
(Not much variety, but offer good quality paper shades and ones in luxury finishes such as feathers or leather. Also carry a wide variety of finials. For lamps with a harp.)

(Offer a great variety of shapes, sizes and fabrics. For lamps with a harp.)

Lamps USA
(Offer a good variety of shapes, sizes and fabrics. For lamps with a harp.)

High Street Market
(Very small variety, but they do have reasonably priced inexpensive shades and a well-curated collection of finials)

Ikea
(Mostly small/medium size white fabric drum and empire shapes, for lamps without a harp.)

Target
(Mostly small and medium drum and empire shades in a great variety of colors and patterns. For lamps without a harp.)

Guides to buying a lamp shade:
-Color/Pattern: Either the base or the lamp shade should make the statement. Have a really unique lamp base? Choose a simple shade to complement it. Have a really plain lamp base? Choose a bolder color or pattern for the base.

-Style: Help assimilate an antique lamp into a more modern or eclectic decor through a simple drum or empire shade. My personal favorite is the black drum shade, which elevates the look of nearly any lamp.

-Size: The height of the shade should be about 3/4 the height of the base. The shade width should be approximately equal to the height from the bottom of base to socket, and the bottom of the shade should be wider than the widest part of the base. Make sure there is at least 2-3 inches between the lamp bulb and the shade.

-Material: Fabric shades such as cotton and linen tend to last longer than paper or parchment ones.

-Fitter: Keep in mind whether your lamp has a harp or not. Found the perfect shade but it's for lamps with a harp and your lamp doesn't have a harp? A $3 clip-on bulb adapter will help.
